Through comprehensive programmes and collaborations, the Research Software Engineering (RSE) team’s objective is to lead, support and guide the research community in leveraging software and data engineering to produce excellent research.
As data and research methods are becoming more complex and more computationally demanding, our mission is to ensure that all researchers and aspiring researchers have access to the necessary expertise to be proficient in developing and maintaining advanced research software tools.
The RSE team at the University of Sheffield hold permanent research contracts and are specialised in the application of software technique to research projects. Our team brings together individuals from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, including computer science, health, neuroscience, psychology, geophysics, environmental science, genetics, astronomy, chemistry and more.
Embedding an RSE in your project is therefore equivalent to initiating a collaboration with a researcher specialising in software engineering. RSEs are research partners, not simply software developers. We have a strong track record of securing funding as Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-Investigators (Co-Is), as well as co-authoring academic publications. Unlike short-term contract staff, we provide continuity: there is no recruitment process required, and no risk of losing expertise at the end of a project due to project/contract expiry and people leaving the University. In addition, it gives more opportunity to collaborate again together in the future.
The University of Sheffield Research Software Engineering team was founded in 2016 by Paul Richmond and Mike Croucher who received EPSRC RSE fellowships to develop research software and support academics/researchers in developing research software.
